The 2015 Super Snow Angel Contest Winner

Congratulations to Wally Kanwischer of Nickle Road NW Calgary, the winner of the 2015 Superyards Super Snow Angel Contest.

Wally was nominated by his daughter Allison Orthner who says her dad 83 recently suffered a heart attack and should not be shoveling snow this winter. We agree!

Wally take it easy and let your super snow angel look after shoveling snow and ice from your yards walkways this winter.
Judging by Wally’s yard the Superyard Snow Angel has his work cut out for him.

In our last post, we discussed some of the benefits proper lawn care and yard work can have for the appearance of your Calgary lawn & garden. Though in the short-term this may mean shelling out a little bit more for higher-quality materials, in the long-term it means less time and money spent on maintenance and repair work… All of which can otherwise add up to being much more than anyone anticipated!

What follows are a couple of ways to create a beautiful lawn and/or garden with long-term sustainability in mind.

Slippery Sidewalks Suck

Slippery sidewalks suck.

So do slippery roads, slippery steps and slippery slopes.

This is why snow removal is so important, especially in Calgary!

A illustration of snowy scene

’tis the season!

Calgary snow removal bylaws dictate that city sidewalks must be cleared within 24 hours of the last snowfall, but a bylaw ticket could be the least of your worries if someone takes a tumble on your walk.

During the 5-year period between 2006 to 2011, over thirty-six thousand Canadians had to visit emergency due to falling on ice… And that’s not even counting the people who died at the scene! It’s easy to understand why here in Calgary, snow removal and de-icing services are some of the most common calls we get in the winter.

Regardless of whether you’re a pedestrian or a homeowner, an icy sidewalk is slippery ground.

Got Snow? Pt. Deux

In the previous post, we discussed some of the snow removal options available in Calgary, as well as some of the ways in which you can avoid injury should you choose to do your own snow removal. In this post, we’ll talk about hiring a trained professional for your snow removal services and some things to consider when choosing a Calgary snow removal company.

So. Cold.

The DIY approach is no doubt the most affordable, it’s also time-consuming, annoying and potentially hazardous… And while we at Superyards love working outside in all weather, for most normal people nothing ruins a morning like freezing their fingers while shovelling the dead weight of fresh snow.

Unfortunately, snow removal is a necessary task that inevitably demands some sort of investment. Be it time, energy and/or money, removing snow in Calgary is about as inevitable as death and taxes.

Speaking of taxes… Did you know that the City of Calgary has spent $9.4 million on snow removal services between Jan. 1and Feb. 14 of this year, even with our remarkably mild weather? For the same time period last year, the city spent $18.7 million on snow removal services.
