Spring is on its way. Finally.
Time to start thinking about lawn care and yard work, Calgary.
After many long months of short days and sub-zero temperatures, Calgarians can finally allow themselves to start thinking of spring and all the sweet warmth, lawn care, and yard work it brings.
Those of us who wait for spring’s arrival with itching green thumbs will soon be hard at work digging into our lawns and gardens, prepping them for the glorious Canadian summer ahead. It’s an exhilarating time to be in the Calgary yard work business!
In this first installment of a series of posts dedicated to spring lawn care, we’re going to take a look at one of the major things you want to do (or at least seriously consider) for your springtime Calgary lawn maintenance:
Revamping your landscape.
There are at least two major reasons to start thinking about sprucing up or even overhauling your lawn and/or garden’s layout – one is aesthetic, the other is long-term sustainability.
In this post, we’ll look at aesthetics.
While the aged, weathered look may work great in some gardens, most home gardens don’t hold that look very well. Whether it’s your backyard patio or a commercial courtyard, chipped slate and spindly shrubs make your landscape look sad and often detract from the value of your property.
Sometime over the coming weeks, take some time to go outside and survey your garden with a fresh set of eyes. Keep a special watch out for cracked or broken stones on your walkways and patios, areas where the grass doesn’t grow very well, and spots that you typically overlook (such as shaded corners, hedges, or mature trees). The more thorough you are with this survey, the better – it’s easy to overlook the little things you see everyday, even though sometimes these are the very first things others notice.
Thinking of selling your home sometime in the coming year? According to a 2013 report from the National Association of Home Builders, the three most desired outdoor fixtures are outside lighting, a patio, and a front porch. And while a home with any of these fixtures has an edge on neighbours that don’t, the overall quality of these fixtures definitely plays a role in their ultimate value. Spring is the perfect time to add a fresh layer of paint to your porch or to just clean off the grit & grime of the past seasons.
Furthermore, good landscaping can also add up to 28% to the overall value of your property and reduce its time on the market by 10-15%, according to landscape economist John Harris. With this in mind, why wouldn’t you put the time & effort into a little visual revamping?
