In our last post, we discussed some of the benefits proper lawn care and yard work can have for the appearance of your Calgary lawn & garden. From giving your home or work a more polished, functional look to adding to your property’s value, proper yard work and lawn care in Calgary can make a world of difference.
In this post, we’ll talk about just some of the many benefits of doing your Calgary lawn care and yard work with long-term sustainability in mind.
According to Capt. Obvious, the more sustainably you create and maintain your garden the longer it will last. It also helps you save cash in the long-term.
Though in the short-term this may mean shelling out a little bit more for higher-quality materials, in the long-term it means less time and money spent on maintenance and repair work… All of which can otherwise add up to being much more than anyone anticipated!
What follows are a couple of ways to create a beautiful lawn and/or garden with long-term sustainability in mind.
Masonry
Try using permeable paving to reduce watershed issues and prevent those ugly cracks and breaks that inevitably appear in almost all concrete surfaces. Other terms for permeable paving are ‘pervious concrete’, ‘porous asphalt’, ‘porous turf’, or ‘resin-bound paving’.
Nomatter what you call it, it’s a great way to prevent ground-wash problems such as flooding, cracked and crumbling concrete, and mucky puddles and pooling.
Soil
As any gardener knows, healthy soil is vital for a healthy garden and lawn. But with so many soil treatment and management options available, finding the right one get be a bit overwhelming
While it’s easier and often cheaper to just use whatever chemical soil additive is on sale, it’s important to remember that it’s not just your soil that you’re trying to bolster – it’s the organisms in the soil that you really want to nourish!
Find a quality organic soil fertilizer that will help nourish both the soil and its organisms while steering away from heavier chemical fertilizers that only target the plants and often wash or ‘run off’ into groundwater, rivers, lakes, and oceans.
The 100 Kilometer Garden
Another sustainable trick for the long-term survival of your lawn is putting the right plant in the right place. One way of doing this is installing what’s called the “100 Kilometer Garden”… Simply put, you just use local, native varieties of plants in your garden instead of those temptingly exotic (and often expensive) ornamentals you find in every garden centre and home renovation warehouse.
In a climate like Calgary’s, the “100 Kilometer Garden” can mean the difference between a gorgeous garden that lasts for decades and a 1-summer wonder that fades as fast as your tan lines.
